Policing is a
special calling – it’s not for everyone. The hours are long, the
stress level can be high, and the expectations are sometimes off the
chart. However, there are many positives to policing. Many police
officers cite “making a difference” as one of the main elements in
maintaining their motivation on the job. Many news stories as well
as weekly shows (COPS, CSI, Exhibit ‘A’, etc.) have given the public
a peek into the profession of policing. This has given the public a
better idea of what challenges police officers face on a daily
basis.
The Moose Jaw
Police Service offers a popular program called the Community Police
Academy. The goal of this program is to open the doors of the Police
Service allowing people to explore the realm of policing within
their own community. Based on the concept of Community Policing, the
people of Moose Jaw are invited into the inner circle of policing
with the aim to educate the public on how the Police Service
continues to do to keep our city as safe as possible with the
resources available. In addition, the academy fosters a
collaborative approach helping people understand that detection and
prevention of crime is everyone’s responsibility. Only by working
together can we as a community put the bite on crime.
The Community
Police Academy is set up to provide information on a number of
police and justice related topics. We try to make each session as
informative and interesting as possible, utilizing officers with
specific expertise in different aspects of policing. The design of
the program also involves practical components which include a
ride-along portion. Participants are given an opportunity to spend a
part of a weekend shift with a Patrol Team member. This allows for a
first hand, real life experience in policing. Participants are able
to see and experience the wide range of calls for service that our
community presents to the police.
